Tennis tournament Stockholm Open 2020 cancelled due to Covid-19

The prestigious tennis tournament Stockholm Open has been held annually for more than 50 years. During the tournament’s history, great players such as Roger Federer, Björn Borg, John McEnroe and Stan Smith have offered world-class tennis in front of packed stands. For the first time since 1969, the organizer is now forced to cancel the 2020 tournament due to the current pandemic.

-It is with great sorrow that we are forced to except that the tournament must take a one-year break, prioritizing our player’s, spectator’s and volunteer’s health and wellbeing, which is always our foremost priority, says Thomas Enqvist, Tournament Director, Stockholm Open

Earlier in the year, the ATP informed that the spring and summer tournaments were suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Stockholm Open has maintained a positive outlook and hoped to be able to organize this year’s tournament as planned in October 2020, awaiting guidelines from Swedish and international authorities and other organizations. Stockholm Open has, in accordance with other ATP tournaments, an international player line-up as well as a large number of Swedish and international guests. This means that a large part of the tournament’s operations requires that all participants can travel in a safe and risk-free way to visit the tournament.

-The impact of Covid-19 has been felt widely across the Tour this year, and it is with regret that the Stockholm Open will not take place in 2020. The tournament will be greatly missed however we look forward to seeing its return in 2021 where the event will undoubtedly continue to play an integral part in the success of the ATP Tour says David Massey, ATP’s Executive Vice President for Europe

In recent years, spectators have witnessed many greats of the game battle it out for the Stockholm Open title. Some of these famous names are, other than our Tournament Director Thomas Enqvist, Stan Smith, John McEnroe, Björn Borg, Mats Wilander, Stefan Edberg, Boris Becker, Jonas Björkman, Thomas Johansson, Roger Federer and our most recent winner Denis Shapovalov. In total 162 winners have been celebrated on the winner podium since the tournament’s inception 1969. However, for the first time there will be a blank space in the history books for the tournament in 2020.

The focus for the organizers will now be set on the tournament in 2021 as well as developing Stockholm Open’s other side events during the year.

-We have many exciting things planned and together with our partners and fantastic ambassadors we will reset and continue our development work for the next Stockholm Open 16-24th October 2021 says Thomas Enqvist.
