Gonzalez / Molteni pair win Stockholm Open’s double title

Santiago Gonzalez from Mexico and Andres Molteni from Argentina have written a new page in tennis history at the Stockholm Open. The pair stunned their experienced rivals Qureshi / Rojer with a 6-2, 6-2 win.

Before the final, Santiago Gonzalez and Andres Molteni had won 22 doubles titles over the years with various partners on the tour. On their way to the Stockholm Open title this week, Gonzalez / Molteni, who were unseeded in the competition, ended up winning against Dodig / Melo, Göransson / Lindstedt and Ruusuvuori / Van De Zandschulp. Now they can put yet another trophy up on their shelves, with their striking win in The Royal Tennis Hall.

In 2013 Qureshi / Rojer won the Stockholm Open title after a final victory against the Swedes Jonas Björkman and Robert Lindstedt, but in today’s final they were defeated by a much better team.

Despite their 47 titles in doubles, Qureshi / Rojer were never really able to level up and lost their serve twice in the first set. The pair would further lose three games in the second set leaving them no chance to catch up with their opponents.

The fact that Gonzalez / Molteni were only broken once throughout the match is a strong indication of how impressive their win is today.
